Fridge 2000 was my second John Wikman musical with the API Theatre Company, and was the most elaborate for costumes! Described as a delicious smorgasbord of Fridge ingredients including healthy servings of Cheddar Cheese, Choc O’latee, Strawberry Sponge, Red Meat, Charlotte Passionfruit, Rose Cauliflower, Norma Jelly, Sunny Queen and her fellow Eggs, and the Lady Finger Bananas.
For this show I was cast as Nana Banana – one of the Lady Finger Bananas whom were the cabaret nightclub-style singers. It was fun working alongside Janet Devlin and Anita-Jane Brown as my co-Lady Fingers in The Banana Bunch. Although we didn’t make an appearance until Act 2 really, so if we were in Act 1 it was mostly chorus / ensemble. I don’t remember much on that although the program credits me also as Stage Crew so I must have been backstage for most of Act 1.
The musical is one of John’s more popular shows, having first been performed in 1992 and is one I’d love to do in my new hometown of Launceston, but with costuming I think it could end up quite expensive. But who knows, maybe one day I’ll bring it to Tassie!
